WD My Passport 4TB USB 3.0 Portable External Hard Drive, Black. He is happy with the extra storage and he reports that all is running well. I'm very particular about hard drives as I've had some issues in the past, but must say the WD Passport product for MAC has been very reliable and user friendly. Portable and easy to.
We are digital librarians. Among us are represented the various reasons to keep data - legal requirements, competitive requirements, uncertainty of permanence of cloud services, distaste for transmitting your data externally (e.g. Government or corporate espionage), cultural and familial archivists, internet collapse preppers, and people who do it themselves so they're sure it's done right. Everyone has their reasons for curating the data they have decided to keep (either forever or For A Damn Long Time tm). Along the way we have sought out like-minded individuals to exchange strategies, war stories, and cautionary tales of failures. We are legion. And we're trying really hard not to forget.

Related Subreddits. I've commanded a 4TB external drive (WD MyBook - WDBBGB0040HBK-EESN). Then today I saw another deal of WD Elements 4TB (WDBWLG0040HBK-EESN). The price difference is about 10€ (WD Elements is cheaper). I've been diggin' a round for a comparison between this two models, but it seems that they're basically the same, except for the case design and the hardware encryption feature in MyBook. In terms of design, WD MyBook lacks a tiny LED indicating if the drive is in read/write phase or not (!) an extremely useful feature.
In terms of hardware encryption, if I understand correctly, WD MyBook will encrypt everything written in the drive, even if I don't specify a password. So if the circuit board of the interface dies before the hard disk itself, I'll risk losing my data? (the same as when I shuck the product to get the hard drive inside, I cannot plug it to the PC since the drive is encrypted).
In this case, this 'feature' is totally useless for me, since I'll use the drive mostly to store HD movies and my travelling photos, encryption seems to do more harm than good. Does that mean that I should go straight to the cheaper one (WD Elements)? Is there any other difference in terms of performance, noise, heat, etc that is worth keeping a slightly more expensive MyBook option? Thanks for the comment, but gosh, it's almost double the price I got for WD Elements 4TB (129€). Anyway I chose to cancel the current order with WD MyBook and go with WD Elements.
Cheaper, and hassle-free. I think i'd be better avoid anything with 'built-in' or hardware encryption. I do need some important stuffs encrypted, but not ALL the content in my drive. And if I need it, the much much better way to do is via software, not hardware. Then we can unencrypt the data easily. Just stay away from any 'forced encrypted' externals!
